Whilst most managers are familiar with setting performance objectives at appraisal time, holding effective career and development conversations with staff is often not directly taught in leadership programmes. As a result, managers can fear raising expectations of promotion which they can’t meet if they ask about career needs. Staff too can lack clarity about their own needs and desires, or hold back on sharing what they do want, making it doubly difficult for their managers to make these conversations effective.
